Amazon Opens Textbook Rental Service

By Dianna Dilworth

Amazon is now renting textbooks through a new platform called Amazon Textbook Rental.

Students can rent textbooks for their classes for a specific time period by clicking on the “Rent Now” button on the book’s listing. Amazon Student members (which requires a .edu email address) are eligible for free two-day shipping on qualifying rental titles.

The rental price is about half of the purchase price for the print edition. For example, Technical Communication by Mike Markel, a book for journalism students, costs $85.60 to buy in the print edition, and it is $42.25 to rent from now until mid December.

All textbook rentals are fulfilled by Amazon. When a student is done with the title, they can return the book through the mail with a prepaid printable label, not unlike the kind of label you would use to return a purchase.
