5chapter.jpgIn a super-sized summer short story event, the serialized reading site FiveChapters has launched Infinite FiveChapters— releasing fifteen stories over the next fifteen days.

The epic procession of short stories begins with “Swimming” by Lauren Grodstein, whose new novel, “A Friend of the Family,” will be out in November. She’s followed by 2009 Flannery O’Connor award-winning author Lori Ostlund. On Thursday, the site will feature a story by Iowa Short Fiction award-winner Jennine Capo Crucet. The series concludes on September 7th with a short story by Tod Goldberg entitled, “Rainmaker.”

Here’s an excerpt from today’s story: “Looking back, as she often did, she was never able to pinpoint the precise moment she first saw him. She would only remember that it dawned on her, slowly, that someone was doing laps in the lane next to her and matching her stroke for stroke. She switched from breast stroke to side and back again, but every time she touched the wall, the swimmer was right there next to her.”
