Subway Names Coca-Cola Vet as Global CMO

By Erik Oster

Subway named marketing veteran Joseph Tripodi as its new global chief marketing officer, effective immediately. He replaces Tony Pace, who announced he would step down to open his own marketing firm this summer, in the wake of a scandal surrounding former Subway spokesman Jared Fogle, who was eventually sentenced to fifteen years in prison on charges of soliciting sex from a minor and child pornography.

Tripodi most recently served as executive vice president, chief marketing and commercial officer at Coca-Cola, a position he has held since 2007. Prior to Coca-Cola he served as senior vice president, chief marketing officer at Allstate for four years. He has also served as chief marketing officer for The Bank of New York and Seagram Spirit and Wine Group and spent nine years as executive vice president, global marketing, products and services for MasterCard International.

The news follows the return of former Subway chief marketing officer Chris Carroll as chief advertising officer in July. The following month, Subway selected BBDO as its creative agency of record following a review.

Although Coca-Cola recently concluded a global creative review, it’s possible another could be in the cards in the near future, following the arrival of Tripodi’s successor. Coca-Cola also named IPG’s UM as its lead media agency in North America in August.

“I’m thrilled to join Subway at this exciting time in the brand’s history,” Tripodi said in a statement. “As consumers tastes evolve, I want to build on Subway’s legacy of innovation to ensure we are always leading in our marketing, product offerings and consumer engagement strategies.”
