Project Shiphunt Finale: Yep, They Found Some Wrecks

By Kiran Aditham

We kinda had a feeling that those adventurous students from Michigan participating in 180LA and Sony/Intel’s “Project Shiphunt” would be successful in their mission to discover a shipwreck or two within Lake Huron’s so-called Shipwreck Alley. And so, it has come to be and the parties involved have unveiled the final web film for the project, “Discovering the M.F. Merrick.” Well, the five Sony Vaio-using kids didn’t just discover the Merrick in deep waters, but steel freighter Etruria, which has been sunk for well over 100 years now. According to one of the marine archeologists involved, the mission was completed thanks to “pings, processing and 3D.”

The two films that have been released should give you a decent enough synopsis of the excursion, but if that’s not enough to satisfy your interest in the effort, Al Gore’s Current TV will be airing an hour-long “Project Shiphunt” special on Aug. 30 at 10PM EST. Hopefully it won’t preempt Olbermann.
