WXIA Allows Viewers to ‘Check In’ to Newscasts via Social Network GetGlue

By Merrill Knox

Starting today, viewers will be able to check in to WXIA newscasts using GetGlue, an entertainment-based social networking site.

GetGlue allows users to check in to television shows, music, movies, books — and now, local newscasts — the same way FourSquare allows users to check in to a physical location. Newscasts produced by WXIA — the Atlanta NBC affiliate — are now included in the GetGlue database, allowing users to share which local newscasts they are watching with their connections within the network, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

WXIA has “made it a priority to increase audience engagement and interaction through social media,” according to a statement announcing the partnership with GetGlue. The station has more than 67,000 Facebook fans and counts its Twitter following — the station feeds, combined with the accounts of its anchors and producers — at more than 85,000.
