WWL has named Doug Mouton sports director. Mouton has worked as a reporter for the New Orleans CBS-affiliate since 2006, serving as the station’s Northshore Bureau Chief.
“Doug’s knowledge of sports, his contacts, and experience give our organization a great individual to lead our coverage in this area,” WWL news director Bill Siegel said, announcing the appointment.
Joining Mouton in the WWL sports department will be former Saints player Darren Sharper. Sharper, who spent 15 years in the NFL and was a member of the Saints’ 2010 Super Bowl championship team, will provide weekly Saints analysis during the football season.
“This upcoming season will truly be different for all the obvious reasons,” Sharper said in a statement, alluding to the Saints’ recent bounty scandal. “As the best TV sports crew, WWL-TV will make sure we bring in-depth, up close and personal interviews. I will break down the Saints and their opponents each week, giving the viewer added knowledge, understanding, and an insight on the games and players.”
A New Orleans native, Mouton spent much of his career covering sports before becoming a news reporter with WWL. Before WWL, Mouton spent 11 years with crosstown rival WGNO, where he worked as a sports and news anchor and reporter, producer, and assistant news director.
During his NFL career, Sharper was selected to the Pro Bowl five times and is a member of the league’s 2000s All-Decade team. He played for the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings before finishing out his career with the Saints.
Mouton replaces longtime WWL sports director Jim Henderson, who retired earlier this year. He will work the station’s 5, 6, and 10 p.m. weeknight newscasts.
