WTKR Reporter Accused of Harassing Political Candidate

By Mark Joyella

A former mayoral candidate has accused Margaret Kavanagh, a reporter at Norfolk CBS affiliate WTKR, of making a series of harassing phone calls. The Virginian-Pilot reports the candidate, Michael Muhammad, announced Thursday he’d filed a criminal complaint, and a warrant for Kavanaugh appears on a city list of outstanding warrants.

WTKR news director Tina Luque said the station stands behind its reporter. “Margaret Kavanagh is a very competent journalist,” Luque wrote in an email to the newspaper. “Sometimes, journalists have to ask tough questions. WTKR supports Margaret and her pursuit of the story.”

Muhammad has been the subject of stories about an incident where the candidate’s driver was shot in the head.
