wtic logo_304x200Last month, we reported that employees at Hartford FOX affiliate WTIC would be voting on whether they wanted union representation.

Well, the people have spoken, and yesterday the Tribune-owned newsroom voted 35 to 17 to join the union. According to The Hartford Courant, all but one of the 53 employees who were eligible to vote did. Everyone from reporters and anchors to camera operators and editors made their voices heard.

“I think it’s a pretty impressive testament to the desires of the people of the workplace,” said Carrie Biggs-Adams, staff representative for the National Association of Broadcast Employees & Technicians-Communications Workers of America. She told the Courant that management repeatedly tried to convince the workers to vote no, using everything from e-mails to individual discussions.

Biggs-Adams said she will begin to schedule negotiating sessions for the workers’ first contract today.
