WRC’s Jim Vance: Giving Kids Trophies for Showing Up Is ‘Child Abuse’

By Mark Joyella

Longtime anchor Jim Vance of Washington, DC NBC-owned WRC has joined a national debate over “participation trophies” for kids, describing the trophies as “child abuse.”

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison sparked the conversation with his announcement he would return trophies given to his two young sons. On the WRC set Monday night, Vance supported the decision:

“It’s child abuse to give a kid a trophy that he has not earned…If a parent’s responsibility is to teach a kid how to deal with the real world, then that is child abuse. Because that’s not the real world.”
