WRAL morning anchor Jeff Hogan is in the hospital recovering from some serious injuries following a body surfing accident over the weekend.

“I banged up my neck and hurt my head,” Hogan, who is morning and noon anchor at the NBC affiliate in Raleigh, said in a Facebook video message from the hospital.

“My spirits are high. Thank you for all the well wishes,” he told viewers.

WRAL anchor-reporter Brad Johansen was with Hogan Saturday morning. He was body surfing as well and said the conditions were fine. “This was not a red flag accident, this was a freak accident,” he said during a segment.

According to the News Observer, at least 12 people have died this year while body surfing due to rough conditions.

Hogan started at WRAL in January, replacing Bill Leslie, who retired in June.
