WNEM anchor Sam Merrill has died after collapsing at home. He was 55.
“Our hearts are heavy here today as we try to understand the loss,” the Saginaw, Michigan CBS affiliate wrote on its website. “But we ask that your thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
Merrill started at WNEM in 1990. He worked there for nine years before leaving for Pittsburgh. He returned in 2002 and anchored the 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts.

“This is devastating news to the TV5 family,” said Al Blinke, vp and gm of WNEM. “Sam was a consummate journalist and anchor. He cared so much for the station and the people he worked with. His positive attitude, professionalism and dedication to the team and community of mid-Michigan will be greatly missed.”
