WMAQ Teams with LX News to Investigate Murders of Transgender People in Chicago

By Kevin Eck

On Saturday, NBC owned Chicago station WMAQ will broadcast a special called The Deadliest Year.

The show takes a look at the increasing number of transgender people murdered in Chicago and is led by NBC Chicago reporter Regina Waldrop and LX visual storyteller Jalyn Henderson.

In its press release, the station said that “every year becomes the deadliest year for transgender people, especially transgender women, in Chicago. These murders often go overlooked and unsolved, leaving the greater community scared and in search of justice. Regina and Jalyn sit down with friends and families of the victims to highlight their struggles and their search for answers.”

“This is a story about families that are increasingly losing their children to murder for choosing to live life as their authentic selves,” says Matt Knutson, vice president of Multi-Platform Content for NBC Chicago.

The one-hour program airs on NBC Chicago on Saturday, June 3 at 6 PM. Following the premiere, The Deadliest Year will also be available for viewing on NBCChicago.com or the NBC Chicago app.
