WJBK Investigative Reporter Amy Lange On Her Most Memorable Story

By Merrill Knox

In her 13 years as a general assignment and investigative reporter at WJBK, Amy Lange has seen her share of interesting stories. But Lange, who says “there’s not a better news town in the country” than Detroit, tells the Observer & Eccentric about her most memorable one:

“Everything went on hold” when the texting scandal of succeeding Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick broke. Lange covered the unfolding events closely, often going on “Kwame watches.”

“There were many cold days, sitting outside of the mansion,” she said. “And, standing outside of city hall, waiting for his vehicle to leave, just to see if we could get a comment.

“Kwame certainly is the most all-encompassing, longest and biggest story that I’ve had the privilege of covering.”

Even after the dust settled, Lange found herself continuing to report on Kilpatrick, although he had already serve jailed time and had moved his family to Texas. His recent book prompted more coverage.

“He’s the story that just keeps on going,” she said.
