WISH-TV photojournalist Shawn Pierce happened to be at Holliday Park in Indianapolis Saturday with his family when several kayakers got caught up in a rushing river.
Indianapolis Fire and Police and rescue crews responded to calls of 5 people trapped after the kayak several of them were in overturned in the swollen White River.
Three were stranded on an island while two others began floating downstream, WISH TV reported.

“I heard Veronica screaming, and then I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, people were in trouble,’” Pierce said.
Pierce used a 12-foot long branch to reach the woman.
“Just helping somebody,” he said. “You’re not doing anything special. Just helping out.”
