Wheelchair-Bound WPEC Editor Suing Station for Discrimination

By Kevin Eck

WPEC editor Michael Caruso is suing the Sinclair-owned West Palm Beach, Fla., CBS affiliate for discrimination after he was moved to nights.

Caruso suffers from spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disorder affecting muscle movement and is confined to a wheelchair. The lawsuit says, “These late hours are physically and mentally draining, which could result in Caruso being hospitalized.”

Gossip Extra reports Caruso is suing parent company Sinclair Broadcasting for discrimination, failure to accommodate and intentional affliction of emotional distress.

Gossip Extra says news director Michael McCormick ordered the schedule changes and has since moved Caruso to overnights. McCormick won’t switch Caruso back, even though his doctor wrote, in a letter, “The changes are bad enough that they are accelerating his physical deterioration and affecting his mental health, as I have recently begun prescribing him antidepressants.”

TVSpy asked McCormick for comment. We will update when we hear back.
