WFLA Anchor Chris Martinez Reveals Why He’s Been Off-Air

WFLA morning anchor Chris Martinez has been off the air for the last few weeks, leading some to question where he’s gone.

Martinez appeared on the Tampa NBC affiliate’s morning show on Friday from his home, where he told viewers he’s taken a medical leave of absence. He also posted an update on social media.

Martinez said he was diagnosed with a condition in his right eye about a year ago. He said he hoped it would get better over time. The condition has gotten worse.

“A couple months ago, it really got to the point where it was affecting my ability to do a lot of things, including being at work with you guys,” said Martinez.

He said the condition makes it hard for him to read the teleprompter. His eyes are also sensitive to the studio lights.

“My doctors, along with my managers there at News Channel 8, decided that the best thing to do would be to take a brief medical leave while I continue to get treatment for this—and hopefully turn it all around,” said Martinez.

He said he feels fine and is hopeful the condition will improve so he can return to work.
