WCPO News Director Steps Down

By Kevin Eck

Alex Bongiorno has resigned from Scripps-owned Cincinnati ABC affiliate WCPO.

A Scripps spokesperson told TVSpy WCPO gm Jeff Brogan thanked Bongiorno for her hard work in an email sent to staffers today, saying, “I wish Alex all of the best.” Brogan added the search for her replacement “begins immediately.”

Bongiorno was named news director in July 2013 after working at WTAE in Pittsburgh, Pa. She’s also worked at WSPA in Spartanburg, S.C.

Here’s the email Brogan sent today:

Team:

I want to share with you that Alex Bongiorno will be leaving WCPO – 9 On Your Side at the end of February. Alex shared the news with her staff a few minutes ago. Alex has worked hard to get us where we are today. Our station’s news strategy has evolved and we agreed to go in different directions.

I want to thank Alex for her commitment and dedication, which has led to advances in our newscasts and overall quality improvement in our newsroom.

I wish Alex all of the best. And while we will have a month to say goodbye, the focus remains on our February Sweep.

Our search for our next news director begins immediately. Over the course of the next few weeks, I’ll hold meetings and open door time to answer any of your questions. In the meantime, send me an email or schedule time if you’d like to talk.
