Taping Numerous Falls, WCBS’s ‘Sidewalk Ice Patrol’ Raises Ethical Concerns

WCBS sent out its “sidewalk ice patrol” on Wednesday to report on the slippery conditions of New York’s walkways. What began as a public service, though, ended with questions of journalism ethics.

During its 6 p.m. newscast, the CBS flagship ran a segment in which reporter Dave Carlin and a videographer captured several people slipping and falling on an icy corner of Queens.

“Is it fair–or even human–to stand nearby, let folks walk into a video trap, and then put them on the air?” asks media critic Richard Huff of the Daily News. “Probably not.” Video inside…
