Green Bay ABC affiliate WBAY said goodbye to its longtime newsroom leader Friday.

Tom McCarey announced his retirement in October. He will be replaced by Matt Kummer.

McCarey was 17 when he started in the production department at WBAY. After a stint in the Navy he was offered a job in news. He’s worked as a reporter, photographer, producer and assignment editor at the station. He was promoted to news director in 1983.

“We have a great station here, we have great people, my job was to find good people and bring them in and let them do their job and get out of their way,” McCarey said in the story the station ran about his retirement. “I hope the station is in the same position in the community as it is now, that would make me very happy.”
