Vocal Cord Issues Force Longtime Tampa Anchor to Step Down

By Stephanie Tsoflias Siegel

After three decades of doing news, WFLA anchor Gayle Guyardo is stepping away.

Guyardo says it’s because of her health. Over the years, she says she has struggled with vocal cord issues.

“I’ve been struggling with vocal cord issues for a few years now, and thanks to incredible care, I have been able to preserve my voice quality. After 33 years in the television news industry, my voice, what I depend on for my job, can no longer live up to the demands of anchoring day in and day out, broadcasting 4 1/2 hours of live news everyday,” Guyardo said in a station statement.

“The good news is my doctor feels after 90 days of vocal rest, I will be able to reverse the discomfort and pain I feel after 4 1/2 hours of anchoring everyday and make a full recovery. Sadly, once my vocal cords are healed, returning to the demands of anchoring 4 1/2 hours will eventually lead to the very same medical issues down the road. So, I’m anxious to see what the future holds.”

Her last day at the station will be Feb. 28.
