The story of “America’s Got Talent” contestant Timothy Poe seemed too good to be true: a veteran of Iraq used song to help heal his combat wounds. And now it looks like it is.
Since impressing the “America’s Got Talent” judges with his country crooning, Poe has come under scrutiny as the military has no record that he was deployed to Iraq. Adding to the public pessimism, is the fact that, after being interviewed by Dallas CBS-affiliate WFAA for a story about veterans that aired during Memorial Day weekend, Poe tried to pass off a photo that he took from a Department of Defense website as himself.
He gave the same photo to “America’s Got Talent” producers and the show aired it as well.
In a recent interview with WFAA, Poe’s fiancee said that he made a mistake in giving the photo of a combat-ready soldier to the station.
“He was looking at pictures, felt rushed,” Poe’s fancee, Carrie Morris, told WFAA. “It was a complete mix-up and he is totally totally sorry about that.”
Morris is trying to clear Poe’s name amid the “America’s Got Talent” scandal. She showed WFAA medical records that appear to verify his injuries from an IED attack while serving in Afghanistan.
In WFAA’s original story featuring Poe, the veteran cried openly as he recounted his time in combat and discussed his healing process.
“I’m just happy to be alive and happy to be back in America,” Poe told WFAA.
