Univision’s WXTV Adds Jorge Viera, Shuffles Evening Anchors

Univision News correspondent Jorge Viera is joining WXTV, Univision’s flagship station serving New York City, as a reporter and anchor of the 11 p.m. newscast.

Beginning in September, Viera will co-anchor the late evening newscast alongside Adriana Vargas. Rafael Pineda, who has worked as WXTV’s primary anchor since 1972, will continue to co-anchor the 6 p.m. newscast with Vargas.

“We are thrilled to have Jorge join our team.  He has been part of the Univision Family for many years so he brings with him an outstanding record of news reporting for our audience,” news director Norma Morato said in a statement. “His vast experience in journalism will contribute to our commitment to continue to deliver an informative high quality newscast for our viewers in the New York area.”

NEW YORK – August 1, 2013 – Univision Communications Inc., the leading media company serving Hispanic America, today announced that Jorge Viera, “Noticiero Univision” (Univision News) correspondent, will join WXTV Univision 41’s primetime newscasts as a reporter effective Monday, September 2, 2013. Beginning Monday, September 16, 2013, he will co-anchor the 11 p.m. newscast alongside EMMY award-winning Adriana Vargas. Veteran news anchor Rafael Pineda will continue to co-anchor the 6 p.m. newscast and work on special assignments.

Viera joins WXTV with more than 15 years of experience in journalism.  His career in broadcast television began in 1997 as a correspondent for Telemundo in Los Angeles. Viera has worked as a news correspondent for some of the most well-known Univision Network News programs such as “Aquí y Ahora” (Here and Now), “Noticiero Univision” (Univision News) and “Primer Impacto” (First Impact).  He has also been frequent contributor on “Al Punto” (To The Point) with veteran journalist Jorge Ramos.

Viera’s vast experience in journalism includes national stories including coverage of the Newtown massacre, the 9/11 terrorist attack, and the O.J. Simpson trial. Additionally, Viera has interviewed some of the most recognized political leaders including former United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Venezuela’s former President Hugo Chávez.
