Trailblazing Sports Anchor Nick Charles Dies

Nick Charles, who worked at D.C.’s WRC and Baltimore’s WJZ before becoming CNN’s first sports anchor, died on Saturday after a two-year battle with bladder cancer.

Charles recently spoke with WJZ about his outlook following the 2009 diagnosis of Stage IV cancer.

“In life you need short-term, medium-term and long-range goals,” Charles said.  “I’m at the short-term goals.  It’s almost day-to-day, moment to moment and it’s really quite sustaining for me and actually invigorating.” WJZ’s report inside…
