Rob Powers, the sports director at Toledo’s WGTV, announced Tuesday that he is moving on to the Big Apple. Powers has been offered a sports anchor position at WABC in New York City, where he will begin full time starting October 17th.
Powers joined the 13abc Action News Department in 1998. In June 2004, he became co-anchor on 13 Action News at 5:30 with Susan Ross-Wells. Prior to WGTV, Powers worked at television stations in Binghamton, New York and Indianapolis, Indiana. He was raised in Cleveland, and attended Eastern Michigan University.
Though no replacement has been named at WGTV, News Director Brian Trauring told The Toledo Blade that current station sports anchors Joe Nugent and Dave Holmes will cover in the interim.
Powers will present sports at 6 and 11 p.m. on weekends, and work as a sports reporter during the week. One of his first assignments will be to cover the Yankees playoff run.
Powers is looking forward to making the jump from the 73rd largest market to #1. “As a kid you dream of doing big things,” says Powers. “And going to WABC-TV – that’s the biggest stage there is.”
