The Dutch Are Taking Down Drones With Eagles

By Kevin Eck

For every new technology that is supposed to make our lives easier or better, or more interesting it seems counter-technology needs to be invented to prevent people from misusing it. Drones are no different.

In what sounds like a plot for an SNL Digital Short, Dutch police are experimenting with using eagles to intercept errant drones. The fear is that a falling drone can hurt someone.

“The bird sees the drone as prey and takes it to a safe area, a place where he does not suffer from other birds or humans,” said Mark Wiebe innovation manager of the National Unit of the Police. “We use [this instinct] in this project.”
