Texas Stations Mourn Death of Longtime News Editor

Ray Gomez, a longtime television news editor who worked at KENS-TV and KSAT-TV in San Antonio, died late Monday at Laredo Medical Center.

Gomez, who most recently worked as news director of KGNS-TV, which has Laredo’s only English-language news broadcast, was 45.

The cause of death was complications from pneumonia, said his wife, Diana “Dee Dee” Fuentes, editor of the Laredo Morning Times.

Carlos Salinas, general manager of KGNS, called Gomez an “irreplaceable asset.”

“I can’t put into words what his loss means,” Salinas said. “His death is a huge shock to everybody. Ray was a friend, a great manager and a great leader in the newsroom.”

Gomez, Salinas said, was a workaholic who put in many long hours at the station. More…
