Study: Local News Outdraws Cable News

By Kevin Eck

A new study released today by TVB is showing local TV news is more watched than cable news by a dominant margin:

“The study uses the May 2012 sweeps period and compares the evening news audience (6 p.m. to Midnight) of national cable news to those of local tv news in the #1, top 3 and top 10 markets.

How strong is local broadcast news? One single market – New York – outpaces the aggregate national audience of the five cable news networks combined. Expanding to just the Top 3 U.S. television markets, local broadcast news has a 168% advantage, and across all Top 10 markets the multiple approaches nearly 5X cable’s national audience (+434%).”

Paired with the recent Pew report that local TV news is seen as more credible than other news outlets, the results seem to point to a resurgence in a medium once seen as a dinosaur.
