Seattle’s KIRO Sends Crew to Japan to Cover Aftermath of Earthquake

By Andrew Gauthier

KIRO morning anchor Chris Egert, along with photographer Tom Matsuzawa, travelled to Japan on Friday to cover the aftermath of last week’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Egert and Matsuzawa had been in Japan for only a few hours on Saturday when they experienced first-hand the instability of the land. Spending time with a host family, Egert and Matsuzawa braced themselves as an aftershock rumbled through the country (video here).

“In the big grand scheme of things, that aftershock was considered fairly minimal, but it was quite frightening nonetheless,” Egert told KIRO’s Michelle Millman over the phone.

Egert and Matsuzawa have been using equipment at CNN’s Tokyo bureau to feed video to KIRO while also providing live reports via phone. Over the weekend, Egert reported on a Seattle woman who was stranded in Japan (video here) and he will continue his coverage this week.
