San Diego Station to Shut Down After Losing CW Affiliation

By Kevin Eck

Bay City Television, owner of San Diego CW affiliate XETV is shutting down.

Station vp and GM Chuck Dunning told TVSpy “effective at 12:01am on May 31st, CW6 will be replaced on XETV by a re-transmission of Channel Nine Network from Mexico City. Bay City Television, the operator of CW6 will cease operations at that time.”

The station’s last newscast will be its 10 p.m. show on Friday, March 31.

Last week we reported Midwest Television-owned CBS affiliate KFMB will operate the CW affiliation as a duopoly starting in September.

XETV was an ABC affiliate until 1974. In 1986, it became one of the first stations in the U.S. to carry the Fox Network, which it did until 2008 when it lost that affiliation and started broadcasting the CW.

TVSpy asked Dunning what would happen to the staff and facilities but haven’t heard back. We’ll update when we do.
