Detroit NBC affiliate WDIV says longtime anchor Ruth Spencer will retire in December 2015.
“I’ve been in television news since 1981 – spending the last 25 years here at Local 4,” said Spencer. “I’ve felt privileged to serve our loyal viewers as a nightly news anchor and as the consumer investigator heading up the ‘Ruth to the Rescue’ unit.”
Her first job was as an assignment editor at KPIX in San Francisco, after working at KRON as a field producer, she started working in front of the camera at KRDO in Colorado Springs. She then worked at KATV in Little Rock, where she was the first female co-anchor at the station, and KSTP in Minneapolis where she was the station’s main anchor.
“When Ruth came to me to say that she wanted to retire, I was both sad for the station and happy for her. She is a viewer favorite and has genuine concern for the people of this community. We will truly miss her,” said WDIV gm Marla Drutz.
WDIV said Spencer and her husband will retire in Longboat Key, Fla. where they are building a house.
