Rich Newberg is retiring from Buffalo, N.Y., CBS affiliate WIVB at the end of December.

He’s worked at WIVB for 37 years and was named senior correspondent in 1999. He started at the station as a weekend anchor.

The Buffalo News reports WIVB news director Scott Levy said Newberg told him he plans to start working on documentaries.

“Western New York viewers have grown up watching and trusting Rich,” said Levy. “Rich’s decades of work can be told by the thousands of stories he has covered during his successful career. Rich’s decision to close this chapter and begin working on documentaries is well supported. We will miss him and his storytelling.”

Newberg, 68, said he is “elated” at the way he is leaving Channel 4 and said the station has agreed to allow him to do a 30-minute special on his career that will air before he exits in December.

“I’m retiring from Channel 4 and looking forward to some productive years pursuing my passion of documentary work,” said Newberg.
