Reporter Making Doc About Story He Says Got Him Fired

Former WINK reporter Matt Dougherty is doing a documentary about the story that he says got him fired from the Fort Myers, Fla. CBS affiliate.

While at WINK, Dougherty did a story on a man who bought a storage locker containing about 100 boxes of patient medical records from a local doctor. In the breach of contract lawsuit Dougherty brought against the station owner, Dougherty claims news director Russ Kilgore told him to kill the story after learning who the doctor was.

The Naples Daily News reports “The records included patient medical histories, test results and medical diagnoses, as well as Social Security numbers and credit card information.”

His documentary is called Code of Ethics. There’s no release date set, according to the website. In the trailer, he interviews the retired maintenance man who bought the storage locker.

The web page promoting the story says “Matt stood at a crossroads in the summer of 2015 when he became the subject of the story he was investigating. In a career changing decision, Matt chose to adhere to a code of ethics and refused to participate in a cover-up, unsure of the outcome.”
