A new main evening co-anchor has been named at WPLG, the ABC affiliate in Miami, Fla.

Nicole Perez will step into longtime anchor Laurie Jennings’ role permanently at 4, 5, 6 and 11 p.m. Jennings stepped down in May after a long tenure at the station.

“After a comprehensive nationwide search, we found Nicole to be the perfect fit,” said WPLG president and CEO Bert Medina. “Nicole was born and raised in South Florida. She knows this market.”

“I am humbled and honored to accept this position,” said Perez. “I was so fortunate to work with and learn from Laurie Jennings, a true icon in this field. Taking on this new role is a dream come true, one that I’ve had since reading the lunch menu on the morning news at Everglades K-8 Center in Westchester. My parents grew up with Dwight Lauderdale and Ann Bishop. I promise to the viewers that I will do my absolute best every single day. I want to serve this community I grew up in the best way I can. We all share a great love for South Florida; after all, its home.”

Perez was the interim director for the past few months. She has a journalism degree from Florida International University and is married to WPLG reporter Roy Ramos.
