Ratings Pioneer Arthur C. Nielsen Jr. Dies

By Andrew Gauthier

Arthur C. Nielsen Jr., a figure inextricably linked to TV ratings, has passed away.  He was 92.

Here’s The New York Times:

The son of Arthur C. Nielsen, Mr. Nielsen became president of the A. C. Nielsen Company in 1957 and its chairman in 1975. He presided over the company’s growth from a modest operation, generating less than $4 million a year in revenue, to one with revenue of more than $680 million.

Nielsen dedicated his entire career to expanding his family’s business. Early on, he saw the promise of computerized research and his idea for the company to invest in a general use computer in 1948 led to continued innovation and expansion in the ensuing decades.  He stepped down as Nielsen chairman in 1983.
