Paul Pelosi‘s alleged attacker David DePape told Oakland based Fox owned station KTVU that what he did “was really bad” because he “didn’t get more of them.”
DePape spoke with reporter Amber Lee from the San Francisco County Jail on Friday, the same day a superior court judge ordered video of the hammer attack on Pelosi to be released. The station said the call was “unexpected.”
At the start of the call he said he had an important message “for everyone in America. You’re welcome.” He also said he attacked Pelosi because people’s individual liberties are under attack and threatened more attacks if he was free. DePape said that the “people killing it have names and addresses, so I got their names and addresses, so I could pay them a little visit…have a heart-to-heart chat about their bad behavior.”
He then said he was sorry for not doing more. Lee didn’t get the chance to challenge his statements or to ask follow-up questions.
“I want to apologize to everyone,” he said. “I messed up. What I did was really bad. I’m so sorry I didn’t get more of them. It’s my own fault. No one else is to blame. I should have come better prepared.”
DePape has admitted his plans to hold former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hostage. She was not home during the attack.
Prosecutors say the video of the attack showed DePape holding a hammer as police responded to a 911 call from the Pelosi home in Pacific Heights. DePape struck Pelosi in the head, knocking him to the floor.
DePape faces state charges of attempted murder and elder abuse, as well as federal charges of kidnapping.
