Wendy Gordon, who was one of the first female anchors in Portland, Ore., has died. She was 71.

Gordon worked at CBS affiliate KOIN in the 1970s and 80s where she covered the eruption of Mount St. Helens and later hosted her own talk show.

She later moved to Los Angeles. After working as evening news anchor at KHJ, now KCAL, until 1990, she went into in media relations for three California politicians.

“Wendy was a tremendous person. A very proud mother and staunch, dedicated activist,” said California state Sen. Anthony Portantino. “She generously opened her home for countless community meetings and served our district and its political leaders extremely well.”

KOIN reports her ashes will be spread along the Oregon coast.
