Oklahoma City Meteorologist Geeks Out Over Thundersnow

By Stephanie Tsoflias Siegel

KFOR Oklahoma City meteorologist Jon Slater got a wonderful weather surprise to start off 2021.

Severe weather moved through the Midwest on New Year’s Day, and Slater was reporting live from downtown. In the midst of his reporting, Slater, a veteran meteorologist, got a close-up look at an unusual weather phenomenon known as thundersnow, a combination of a snowstorm and a thunderstorm.

“Oh my goodness! Did you see that?” Slater can be heard exclaiming live on camera as snow came down. “THUNDER SNOW. There was a lightning bolt that just hit downtown Oklahoma City while I’m talking about the snow!”

“I can’t believe that just happened to me,” he continued. “Unbelievable. Wow, and it wasn’t like a flash or a rumble. That was a lightning strike and a crack! Oh my goodness. You know what folks? I’m checking that off my bucket list.”

His giddy reaction is what everyone needed the first day of the New Year.
