Nexstar-Tribune Merger Edges Closer to Reality

By Stephanie Tsoflias Siegel

The Nexstar-Tribune merger is one step closer to happening, but first Nexstar needs to divest 13 properties.

The U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday that it will have to sell stations to address antitrust concerns.

Right now, Nexstar owns 171 stations in 100 local markets and Tribune has 44 in 33 markets. The deal would create the largest operator of local stations in the U.S.

Nexstar has already sold properties to Tegna and Scripps. The company will continue to divest stations in states including Alabama, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia.
