New York’s WPIX Set to Launch 6:30pm Newscast

WPIX/Ch. 11 will launch its 6:30 p.m. newscast next Monday with Jim Watkins and Kaity Tong as anchors.

The newscast, the only locally produced one of its kind in the time period on a broadcast station, will emanate from a studio that was built last week.

“As other stations eliminate or downsize their newscasts, PIX is expanding our local coverage in the form of our 6:30 program and growing digital services,” Wil Surratt, senior executive producer of evening news programming, said in a statement. “We are reaffirming our commitment to providing the news, weather and sports that impact the lives of our tristate viewers.”

The show will start each night with “11 Stories Making News Right Now on PIX,” an 11-minute segment covering the biggest stories at that point, followed by a mix of weather, traffic and sports. More…
