New Survey Casts Doubt on Future of Local TV Drone Use

By Kevin Eck

The latest in a series of surveys on local TV by the RTDNA and Hofstra University looks at how local station view drones.

Research_2016_TV_news_drone_marketThe great drone revolution seems to be more of a minor reshuffling.

Most surprising to TVSpy is that only 4 percent of really small markets (151 and up) are using drones and of those asked 26.7 percent said they’ve used them but aren’t anymore and nearly 70 percent said they have no plans to use them. Middle sized markets (51 to 100) seem to be using drones the most with 21 percent saying they use them.

The survey also looked at staff size relative to drone use. A newsroom with a larger staff was more likely to use a drone with 26.8 percent of larger markets (51 and up) say they are using drones.
