It has been nearly two years since NBC Local Media announced that it would re-launch 10 local websites in an effort to broaden their reach. According to new traffic figures released by NBC, it appears that the move is paying off.

NBC’s “Locals Only” websites have notched double-digit traffic gains over the last year with a 20% increase in monthly unique visitors and a 32% increase in monthly page views (comparing August 2010 to August 2009).

NBC says that a major factor in the increase is the sites’ social media integration. The amount of referrals from Twitter and Facebook have quadrupled in the last year and Greg Scholl, president of Local Platforms for NBC Local Media sees this as a key factor in the continued growth of the local websites. He said that the social media momemtum reflected the fact that “our local news organizations have embraced expanding well beyond our core local broadcast business to provide our audiences with the information they seek 24/7 on whatever platform they choose.”
