581958_232400006899379_55056754_nAfter 21 years at Chicago’s WLS, meteorologist Mike Caplan has been let go from the ABC-owned station. WLS currently has five full-time meteorologists and one per diem (including new hire Cheryl Scott) and had to let one of them go.

Caplan broke the news to his fans on Facebook last night, writing:

“Today was my last day with ABC7. The powers that be have decided to take the weather department in a direction that no longer includes me. It has been a thrill for me to be on tv in the area in which I grew up. I look forward to carving out a new chapter in my professional life, and with the support of friends and my wonderful family, I am confident wonderful challenges and opportunities lay ahead.”

Caplan joined WLS in 1994 as a morning meteorologist before transitioning to weekends. He was most recently its afternoon and fill-in weather anchor.

WLS has not yet issued a statement on Caplan’s departure.
