Madison Morning Team Attacked During Live Report

WMTV‘s morning photographer-reporter team was attacked while on the air Tuesday morning.

According to the station, Amelia Jones and Curt Lenz are OK. They continued to provide coverage throughout the morning but are still shaken.

The two were covering a series of violent protests outside Madison, Wis., when the attack happened, according to the station. Lenz was shooting video outside a 7-Eleven when he saw someone taking something from inside the store after the window was smashed.

The man, who was later identified as 40-year-old Michael Campbell, told them he didn’t want to be filmed, then attacked the camera operator while live on the air. He’s since been arrested.

In the video, you see the camera begin to tilt and then you see Campbell before the station cut to VO.

“This is a phone call you don’t want to get in the morning,” Don Vesely, vice president, general manager WMTV, said in a statement about the incident.

“I am thankful that both Amelia and Curt were OK after this confrontation and assault,” he continued. “They are incredibly talented journalists, and demonstrated their courage and conviction by providing additional news coverage for the next two hours.”

As TVSpy has reported, this comes as journalists across the country find themselves under siege while covering protests.
