Las Vegas GM Leaving After 35 Years

Emily Neilson has confirmed with TVSpy she is stepping down as GM of Las Vegas CBS affiliate KLAS.

She says she told the staff this week she’s leaving the station in a few months and added, “I have agreed to stay until a replacement is in place.”

Neilson has worked at KLAS for 35 years. She says she felt she owed it to former owner Landmark to stay on through the transition to new owner Nexstar.

She says the idea to leave the station has been two years in the making and that she’s looking forward to starting the next phase of her life.

Neilson started at the station as a part-time traffic clerk in 1980 and worked her way up from newsroom secretary to being named news director in 1992.

In 2012, she told Las Vegas Woman Magazine, what she thinks it takes to be a good manager saying, “My advice for new managers, regardless of the profession, is to learn from others but don’t try and imitate their style. Be yourself. Avoid the trappings of ‘being the boss’ that might set you apart and hurt your ability to get the information you need. Respect every position equally. You are not more important than others in the organization.”
