KFYR Transitions to HD: ‘This Is a Pretty Picture’

By Andrew Gauthier

KFYR, the NBC-affiliate in Bismark, ND, began broadcasting in high definition this week, completing a weeks-long transition that included the construction of a new set.

“What we’ve always delivered is good, comprehensive news,” KFYR news director Monica Hannan said.  “What we haven`t always delivered, is a pretty picture. This is a pretty picture.”

There are still a couple of shows that aren’t yet being broadcast in HD but the majority of KFYR’s schedule, including its local newscasts, is now airing in high definition.

General manager Dick Heidt said recently that converting to HD cost the Hoak Media-owned station “well over a half million dollars.”

KFYR reports that its satellite stations in western North Dakota, including KQCD in Dickinson, will transition to HD within the next few years.
