KCCI Names 21 Year Vet Chief Meteorologist

By Kevin Eck

Kurtis Gertz has been promoted to chief meteorologist for Des Moines, Iowa CBS affiliate KCCI.

Gertz has worked at KCCI for more than 21 years. He started in 1994 and worked there until 1998. He came back in 2000 after working at KTVX in Salt Lake City, Utah.

“Kurtis is a ‘pro’s pro’ and a natural leader,” said president and GM Brian Sather. “He is the ideal person to carry on our mission of keeping Iowa families safe in the wake of John’s departure. Kurtis’ passion for forecasting is directly tied to his love for outdoor activities; when he’s forecasting Iowa weather, he knows how important it is to get it right.”

Gertz moves from being the morning meteorologist to working the 5,6,9 and 10 p.m. newscasts. He succeeds John McLaughlin who resigned in September because of health issues.
