A prayer vigil last night for Keith Lamont Scott, who was shot and killed by police in Charlotte, N.C., devolved into a second night of violent protests in the city where one person was shot and at least nine were wounded.
ABC affiliate WSOC went live near 7 p.m., with a crowd gathered around a fountain in Marshall Park. Reporter Dashawn Brown was in the park, with Allison Latos and Scott Wickersham in the studio.
Around 7:30 p.m., Fox-owned WJZY went live to Marshall Park where protestors were breaking up into two groups: one heading towards Mt. Zion church, the other going to the government center. The station read a statement from Scott’s family asking people protest peacefully. WJZY did the bulk of its reporting about the protests during its 10 p.m. newscast.
A little after 8:30 p.m., CBS affiliate WBTV had Brigida Mack and Delano Little in studio with Sarah Blake on the streets reporting that “things have gone from zero to 60 in the last 10 minutes.” Mack observed that “things seem to be escalating each time” they tossed to Blake, who told viewers she heard loud bangs at about 8:27 p.m., but didn’t know what they were. She reported tear gas had been used near her location.
WCNC broke into Blindspot around 8:45 to report multiple shots had been fired. Beth Troutman and Bill McGinty in studio tossed quickly to WLTX reporter Mary Sturgill and photographer Eric Alkire near the Omni Hotel where the two showed viewers blood on a sidewalk and police in riot gear protecting the entrance to the hotel.
We reported earlier Sturgill and Alkire were attacked by protestors just after filing a report for their Columbia, S.C., station’s 11 p.m. newscast.
WCCB broke in close to 9 p.m. with Morgan Fogarty and Will Kennedy in studio with Courtney Francisco and Amy Cowman on the streets. Francisco was harassed by a protestor right off the top of her live shot.
