Hockey Provides Ratings Boost for Chicago’s WMAQ

The folks at WMAQ-Channel 5 should raise a toast to the Chicago Blackhawks. The excitement surrounding the Hawks and the team’s Stanley Cup victory helped improve the fortunes of Channel 5’s late news in the June Nielsen ratings book released Thursday.

WMAQ parent NBC telecast the deciding game in the Stanley Cup finals June 9, and the huge ratings for that one game in Chicago helped lift the monthly numbers for the WMAQ late newscast that followed. With a 7.3 rating (255,000 households) Monday through Friday, WMAQ’s 10 p.m. news was a commanding No. 2 in the June ratings book.
