Hearst Television has named its journalism fellowship program after retired news executive Fred Young.
Young retired as svp of news in 2008 after 46 years in the business.
“Finding the best people and helping them become strong leaders was a hallmark of Fred’s legacy at Hearst,” said Barbara Maushard, vp of news for Hearst Television. “With this program we seek to blend the strong journalistic values that Fred and Hearst Television represent, and the modern delivery of the important content on which local news audiences depend.”
The Fred Young Hearst Television Producing Fellowship is a hands-on 10-week paid training program for graduating college seniors who want to produce news for TV, digital and mobile platforms. The fellowship started in 2014. The Fellows are chosen in May/June or December and sent to a Hearst station for training. If all goes well, they’re hired as a producer at a Hearst station.
Hearst has chosen Amina Lowell from Columbia University, Courtney Sonn from Boston University and Alexis Porter from Howard University as 2016 Summer Fellows.
Applications for the winter 2017 program will be accepted beginning November 2016.
