GM Leaving Chapel Hill’s WNCN to Run Radio Station

Local radio station 1360WCHL is being sold to Barry Leffler, the general manager of NBC-17, who will leave the television station he has led since 2005.

Current majority owner Jim Heavner announced Friday that minority ownership in the radio station had been sold to Lefler, with plans to sell complete ownership at a later date. Leffler, who lives in Chapel Hill, will serve as CEO and managing partner, with Heavner continuing as chairman.

“Our need to communicate has not changed, but communications media are changing. And it is happening rapidly,” Leffler said in a statement. “This presents us with enormous opportunities to develop integrated local media to create a new ‘medium of record’ for Chapel Hill-Carrboro and the growing surrounding areas. That is my objective.”

Under his leadership, WNCN-TV (NBC17) went through the largest expansion of a local television station in the country, according to the statement. More…
